Fall Travel Day 7 Philly

Fall Travel Day 7 Philly At the end of my last entry, I was sitting in the Tampa airport waiting to board my flight to Philly. The flight was uneventful, and I landed in Philly around 10PM. After getting my luggage, I took the shuttle to Budget where my rental car was supposed to be waiting for me. Id reserved a low-profile Taurus or somesuch. After hitting it off with the Budget guy, he remarked the car you reserved isnt ready at the moment, but Im going to hook you up with something better for the same price. Youre in spot A-12. Okay, I thought. A midsize instead of a compact? Great, whatever. Then I reached spot A-12. Sitting in said spot was a brand new, gleaming silver Ford Mustang GT, which I was getting for the price of a subcompact. Dude. I opened the door and was flooded with new car smell. Delicious. I got in, turned the key, and heard that throaty roar that makes the Mustang V6 famous. Bliss. And then I thought about all of the places Id be traveling in the next five days, some of them not the most car-friendly spots in the world. And Id be leaving this car for hours at a time on busy city streets, where dings and scratches are practically inevitable. And truth be told, somehow I just dont trust myself with a ~$40,000 automotive masterpiece. Its not you; its me, I said to the car. This just isnt going to work out. I think she understood. I turned the car off, shed a tear, and headed back into Budget. I can hear all of you collectively booing me. Its okay, I deserve it. My 5-year-old Pontiac Grand Am and I are feeling more secure on the streets of PA and NJ, however. And the story isnt over the Mustang GT and I will meet again someday. When Im a little older. ;-) My mom lives in Philly so Im staying with her to save MIT some money (and sleep in my old bed). I got to her house around midnight and shed made dinner for me arent moms awesome? Sunday night was the Philly central meeting. I had dinner with two of the Philly ECs, Mark and Steve, at a nice mexican place close to Germantown Academy (where the meeting was taking place). We were in Germantowns Arts Center theater, and thank heaven we were, because 500+ people showed up. The theater holds 514, and there were an additional 65 folding chairs there, and still I could barely find an empty seat. The ECs were enormously helpful (we had six in total) and I think that generally folks had a good time at the presentation. My mom came to see her kid in action and really enjoyed herself. She gave me some good feedback on my presentation two things to be exact. Ill clarify them here in case any of you Philly folks are reading this. 1) When Im talking about MIT athletics and I show the pic of the cheerleaders, I say something like MIT cheerleaders are beautiful and smart. My mom thinks that this makes me sound like a dirty old man. For the record, I include this in my presentation because I am still annoyed by the CC thread from last year in which someone said that MIT cheerleaders must be unattractive because MIT students are smart, and that smart and beautiful are mutually exclusive. Grrrr. I denounce that statement every chance I get, and thats why I bring it up during central meetings not because I am a dirty old man. 2) At the end when I talk about the advancement of women in science and engineering fields being a big priority for MIT, and then talk about Susan Hockfield embracing this, my mom thinks it could be misinterpreted that people might think that Im saying Susan Hockfield was chosen foremost because she is a woman. No no no no no no no no! I wholeheartedly apologize to anyone who misunderstood me. To clarify, the point I was trying to make is that Susan Hockfield was the best candidate by a landslide, and the fact that she also happens to be a woman reinforces the fact that women overwhelmingly belong in science and engineering fields as much as their male counterparts do. The world simply needs to do more to encourage them at a younger age. And what better place for that movement to start than at MIT, under the direction of Susan Hockfield. The reason that I feel compelled to address this issue at my info sessions should be obvious, but in case its not: (1) MIT has a history of being male-dominated, and though this has changed in the last couple of decades (class of 09 is 47% women), the negative stereotype persists, and (2) frankly, women are (in general) not encouraged from an early age to dream of places like MIT in the same ways that men are, and I think that is criminal. So hopefully Ive cleared those two things up a bit. (Thanks mom for the feedback!) Woke up early this morning and had three great school visits in Philly today. More on those in the next entry I think this one is long enough. :-)

Today we live in a modern age where technological development is one of the greatest gifts to humanity. Technology is the making, modification, usage, and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems and methods of organization, in order to solve a problem, improve a pre-existing solution to a problem, achieve a goal, handle an applied input/output relation or perform a specific function (Wikipedia). You read "Kotu Fashion Accessories Shop" in category "Fashion" According to David K and John M (2000), special offer is a tool to keep loyal customers and satisfy new customers. The authors claim that a retailer can apply special offers for different customers by recognizing loyal or new customers digitally via Kiosks, Internet and mobile devices. By using it, business can conceive different offers for different customers based upon their historical purchases and preferences. On 5 April 2013, the research team visited Qua Tang shop, one of the most popular accessories shop among the area, which also is a strong competitor of SOOT shop (see figure 2). The team found out that Qua Tang hop offers discounts and other sales promotion strategies frequently. For instance, the shop offered ‘buy 2 get 1 free in the woman day last month and it was high appreciated within new and loyal customers (see Appendix C). According to Wend (2012), some small businesses are now considered special offer through email marketing promotion as an effective way to get more attention of the customers. Special offer can be a way to motivate customers to buy products, it can be occurred with many forms as well, for instances, ‘buy and get discount on the second product’, ‘buy one get one free’ and free shipping. In order to create an efficient email advertised offer, Wend mentions four advices. Firstly, a business should understand the need of the customers and offers them products with perceived value. Secondly, business has to be well defined their goals, why they do an offer. The reason they make the offer should not be because their competitors do. Thirdly, firms should be clear about their ability, which meaner that they have to make sure they can afford the offer. Finally, a successful business should think about partnering with a non-profit making organization in order to position the business’s name in the mind of customers. According to Jim (201 1), some businesses have mistaken the true meaning of special offers, which caused irreparable damages to a company’s reputation. He expresses some main ideas help firms to understand more about special offer. One of the most common mistakes that most of small business makes is training the marketplace to wait’. For example, a seminar business applies an early-bird discount to persuade customer to book promptly although customers still buy tickets with the actual price. Then, when the seminar’ s date gets close, he offers X% to sell his tickets quickly. Eventually, the business loses it reliability. Secondly, Jim found that famous brand companies are often successful with their special offer strategies. The reason is that big companies often spend quite a long time for their wide research and receives advices from their professionals. Membership Card (HTH) Ms. Maim Then Then, the owner of SOOT Shop stated in an interview on 6 March 2013 that she wants to apply sale promotion strategies, which can effectively attract more customers and improve the shop’s loyal customers (See Appendix A). The research team’s survey on 10 April 2013 shows that 9 out of 10 respondents are attracted to the idea of having a membership card for an accessories shop (See Figure 3) and they would like to make more purchases if the shop provides promotions (See Appendix C). In an interview on 12 April 2013, Mrs.. Cacao HTH Hung, the owner of Gardenia Hotel in Dalai City, implies that membership card is one of the most important promotion tools to keep the loyal customers on track (See Appendix B). However, there are many firms failed to run the customer loyalty programs effectively. She also states that in order to run the customer loyalty programs efficiently, businesses should do surveys and market researches on customer urchin’s behaviors and then create an adequate reward for loyalty. According to Dowling and Uncles (1997), a European investigators researching business-to- business marketing in the sass stated that a firm is mostly profitable from their loyal customers. This is because of seeking more profits by lower servicing costs, less price sensitivity and suggestions passed on to other potential customers by loyal purchasers. On 5 April 2013, the research team visited Qua Tang shop, one of the strongest competitors of SOOT Shop and noticed that Qua Tang Shop has paid special attention to improve their customer loyalty programs such as patronage rewards and membership cards. They offered membership cards with different colors and designs aiming to different valued cards. According to LittleKing integrated marketing group (n. D), businesses should be aware of the mentality â€Å"one product fits all† because not all of the customers’ needs and wants are always the same. Therefore, a hierarchy of valued consumers should be released such as diamond, premium and gold membership cards. Furthermore, ‘lapsed’ members, who signed for a membership card, but only use it for one time and never use it again, are also problems dealing with membership cards and challenging almost all genuineness. If the shop provides membership cards for those who will probably ‘lapsed’, the shop will not only waste their efforts to maintain the customers, but also suffer from loss of resources such as the cost to make the membership card. According to a survey of professor Worthington (2009), although membership cards often attract widespread customers’ interests, they are still likely that it has a large amount of ‘lapsed’ members. There is no accessible information that could show the percentage of membership cards that are ‘lapsed’ or ‘active’. Nevertheless, professor Worthington survey outcomes indicate that the most frequent reason for not participating in membership programs are not attracted by the prizes and a slight rate of people who cited ‘privacy’ reasons. RECOMMENDATION Social Networking Site (An) On the survey conducted by the research team, nine out of ten respondents like purchasing accessories on Faceable. The expert, Ms. Unguent, said that having an efficient controlled Faceable page could help to increase the number of customers. Noticed by the research team, the competitor, VC shop, also had a Faceable page, which had well decorated picture albums and quick service. Bankcard (2011) asserts that by directly using a social networking site and connecting with the customers could collect positive reviews and high reputation as return since customers feel that their feedbacks are important and they are cared. The Thou Tree News (2012) reports that the number of Vietnamese Faceable users increased of around 2 times within one year. Unguent (2012) adds that the significant Faceable users’ age are from 15 to 34. Therefore, Soot shop should create a Faceable page, which is easy and inexpensive, to increase the potential customers. The expert, Ms. Unguent, advised that the shop should have 2 Faceable pages, which are a personal page and a fan page. The shop can update the information and pictures related to their products, notes, and feedbacks from customers and use the personal page to share this information and add friend. In this way, the shop can be active in increasing the number of users they want to transfer information because users do not randomly like the page unless the shop has a big brand name or high products’ prestige. Ms. Unguent also recommended not tagging the customers in the pictures to avoid disturbing them, except the owner’s friends if they do not mind. Ms. Unguent added that the pictures should have clear descriptions and be similar to the products because if the products and picture are not matched, the shop could lose their prestige. The most impressive aspect on the competitor’s Faceable page is they have separated albums for each kind of products; this could help customers to save their time for searching purposes. Soot shop should consider this aspect. The most important thing that VC shop cannot efficiently manage is that there are many other shops’ advertising on the page and the host also updates personal statuses and emotions. This could get bad reputation in return and the customer could click on the other’s pages, as a consequence, they might lose their customers. Hence, Soot shop should not post any personal activities onto their business pages. On the survey administered by the research team, service is the most importance to the female customers and the second importance to the male customers. In addition, the competitor shop also has the order service for the products that they do not have. Therefore, Soot shop should try often stay online to quickly response to customers. Their strength is to make handmade accessories hence producing stuffs that customers order is also possible. Special offer (That) The research team administered a survey and pointed out that there are 9 out of 10 respondents would like to buy products from accessories shop where offers them gifts or discounts (See Appendix C). Half of the respondents like to make purchases on special days if this shop offers ‘5-10%’ discount and another 5 respondents refers buying if the shop applies ‘buy 2 get 1 free’ (See Appendix C). The research team observed a well-know accessories shop named Qua Tang, which is one of a SOOT shop’s competitor. Qua Tang implements sales promotions strategy frequently to acquire more customers. The latest is ‘buy 2 get 1 free’ offers on woman days and it is widely popular among the area. According to Wend (2012), special offer through email marketing promotion is now extremely important to small business. She informs that special offer indeed can be an effective way to prompt customers to buy products. In order to attract customers by special offer, Wend argues that a firm has to understand the need of customers and offers them products with appropriate value. Moreover, business needs to know their specific goals and abilities to make a healthy offer. Jim (2011) states that not every business understands clearly the true meaning of special offers, which leads them to several inevitable losses. He mentions an example regarding to his one customer that losses its reputation due to misunderstanding of special offer. According to David K and John M (2000), special offer is an efficient strategy to fulfill loyal customers’ and new customers’ expectation. The authors infer that a retailer can know more about customer’s buying powers and preferences using modern tools such as Kiosks, Internet and mobile devices in order to manage different offers for each group of customers. The positive aspects of special offer are obvious; every customer refers to receive discounts and gifts when they make purchases. Thus, if SOOT shop wants to increase the number of first-time customers and preserve the number of membership, sales promotion as special offer is essential. However, special offer is quite popular among other accessories shop, many competitors also apply special offer to attract more customers such as Qua Tang shop. Therefore, SOOT shop also has to make sure the reason for offering, who to offer, what and when to offer. For example, shop can offer ‘5% discount’ for new customers and ‘10%’ discount for loyal customers on special days such as Valentine and Mother days. In addition, in order to prevent unnecessary losses, Ms. Then needs to know clearly the ability to offer. If she offers a product value 10,000 vend and sells it 12,000 vend after discount, she would be suffered because she still has to pay money for employers, electricity, and many other fees. Membership card (HTH) A survey released by the research team on April 2013 indicated that 90% of respondents are interested in having a loyalty card for a fashion accessories shop (See Appendix C). Mrs.. Cacao HTH Hung, the owner of Gardenia Hotel in Dalai City, mentions in an interview on 12 April 2013 that one of the most significant promotion tools to maintain the loyal customers is offering membership cards (See Appendix B). Nonetheless, there are not many companies can succeed in implementing the loyalty programs. She goes on to suggest that considering the evaluation of customer purchasing behaviors and then generate the accurate rewards of loyalty are the most important factors to maintain loyalty customers. Dowling and Uncles (1997) refer to a research, which was found by European researchers studying business-to- easiness marketing in the sass. The research claimed that loyal customers are the main contribution to a company’s profit. It is due to its lower expenses by lower servicing costs, lower advertising costs and advices passed on to other potential buyers by loyal purchasers. It will cost much more to persuade a new buyer to make a purchase in the shop than to make a current shopper to purchase again. Hence, SOOT shop should focus more on their current customers and often remind them about the shop through providing promotions and running membership programs. The research team visited one of the competitors, Qua Tang shop, on 5 April 2013 ND noticed that Qua Tang Shop has fully concentrated on improving their membership programs. They provided different colors and designs cards, which distinguished between levels of card members. Little;King integrated marketing group (n. D) states that companies should notice the mentality â€Å"one product fits all†, because there are always differences between every customer’s needs and wants. Therefore, a hierarchy of valued consumers should be released such as diamond, premium and gold memberships. Thus, SOOT shop should apply membership cards to its customers (See Figure 3). The differences between membership cards allow the hop to serve a certain type of persons based on their standard of membership. To illustrate, the system can automatically find the names of customers, their mobile phone numbers, email addresses and save their previous purchases when they use their membership cards to make a purchase. Through that process, the shop can easily classify the customers’ interested items and clothes in order to introduce different kinds of items, clothes to different types of customers. In addition, the shop can efficiently inform different types promotion information to different types of buyers through their mobile phones or email addresses. One of the difficulties of providing membership cards is ‘lapsed’ membership card. Lapsed’ member meaner customer who applied a membership card and only use it for one time. According to a survey of professor Steve Worthington (2009), it always has a large amount of ‘lapsed’ members in every business. There is still lack of available information that could show the percentage of membership cards that ar e ‘active’ or ‘lapsed’. Yet, professor Worthington examinations results imply that the most common reason for not taking part in membership programs are because they are not attracted by the rewards and a small proportion of respondents who cited ‘privacy’ reasons. Thus, SOOT Shop must be aware of their responsibilities to its consumers in satisfying the redeemable prizes and customers’ information to remain customers’ beliefs. In order to do so, firstly, SOOT Shop should pay more attentions to members who ‘lapsed’ through classifying members’ last purchases. And then try to find out the customers’ reasons of not taking part in the membership programs. Finally, inform different types of promotions to different customers. For example, a shop finds out that a small umber of their customers quit being the shop’s loyalty customers because of the low membership cards’ benefits. The shop may apply different type of promotions to those particular members. The shop may send a message to those customers that they fortunately won a randomly contest of the shop and they will receive double points in every purchase by membership card. CONCLUSION In conclusion, SOOT accessories shop should apply the use of social networking sites such as Faceable in order to attract more customers. It should consider launching a Faceable page, which has well decorated products’ albums and information because Faceable takes no cost to create and advertise. It also should strike up friendship with Passbooks users to advertise products widely. Moreover, it should stay online over time to answer customer’s questions and feedbacks. By that way, customers will probably feel that they are respected and it helps the shop to improve its reputation. The shop also has to make sure that the quality of products is similar to the pictures that it has on Faceable to earn customer’s belief. However, SOOT shop should manage to avoid irritating people by tagging them every hour with pictures. In addition, most of people like to make purchases when there is a discount or gift offer. Thus, SOOT shop should apply special offer to get new customers as well as to preserve loyal customers. Nevertheless, other accessories shop also apply special offer, so SOOT shop should be considered when applies this sales promotion tool. To be more specific, SOOT Shop should clearly understand the reason for making the offer, who to offer, what and when it should offer. SOOT shop should not forget their ability to make an offer because if it gives customers more than what it can afford, the shop will face difficulties. Furthermore, SOOT shop should be concentrated on keeping loyal customers by reminding them via membership programs because it will save the services and advertising costs. Providing membership cards have different colors and designs can help SOOT shop to easily classify each type of customer through their names, phone numbers email addresses and purchasing powers. Therefore, the shop would be able to know more about customer’s wants, interests and preferences. One of the difficulties of membership program is that there could be many ‘lapsed’ membership cards. Unguent NCO Line, who has a successful online cosmetic shop named Rim Catnap Skincare, to ask for comment on my recommendation for the business that my research team currently working on. An: Hello Line. Thank for spending time to meet me. I’m An from research and report writing class. As I told u before that today I want to interview you for advice on my project. Ms. Line: Hi An. So how far have you been doing? And which problem that you want me to give advice on? An: Ah. The business that I’m working on is a clothing accessories store. The owner wants to increase the amount of customers. The subtopic I’m doing is social networking sites. However it seems totally new to the owner, her shop doesn’t even have a Faceable page which is now quite familiar to the teenagers and young adults. Ah one more thing, teenagers and young adults are her target customers. That’s why I suggest her to have one. Ms. Line: Oh I see, you are right that Faceable is now getting more popular and it can help to increase sales. But let me ask u this, have u ever been tagged by an online shop in its pictures. An: Yeah, a lot. Ms. Line: How do u feel about that? An: A little bit annoying. At First, I Just ignored them, but there were many notifications and that disturb me. Therefore, if any shop tags me, I will block them or report as spam.. Ms. Line: So why do you suggest the owner to have a Faceable page? An: Ah I’m going to ask her create a fan page. Can you tell me how to increase the â€Å"like†? Ms. Line: k, because she and I work on different kinds of business so you may apply in some ways but not exactly the same k? I suggest having 2 pages, one is a personal page and one is a fan page, because the customers do not randomly like your page unless you have a big brand name or prestige of your product. An: can you please explain in more details? Ms. Line: for the fan page, you update all the product’ details there such as pictures, notes, feedback from customers, etc. For the personal page, all you have to do are adding friends and share what you have updated on the fan page. Because the customers are afraid to be annoyed therefore we have to be active by adding friends with them and remember not to tag them, I think you already know why, huh? Maybe you could tag some of your friends if they don’t mind. And sharing the stuffs that you updated on fan page that mean the information is transferred to the users twice. An: Ah I got it. Ah I also want to recommend on the pictures that she is going to post on Faceable, it must be clear, close enough to see what the product made from. What else do you think I should suggest her? Ms. Line: ah it’s good to do that but you should put the description for the pictures, because pictures sometimes are not clear and that could cause misunderstanding about raw materials. Ah it reminds me that the real products and pictures have to be the same because you may lose prestige if the products look different. You could describe in the pictures that the products may slightly different because of the light. And you could also create an album of customers wearing your products on Faceable, which could help to increase the loyal customers and increase sale from your customers’ relatives since the products is ore reliable when it is introduced by friends. If you are lucky, your customers could be some hot girls or models etc. , you know, stuffs are worn by beautiful girls maybe look more beautiful (laugh) and their fans could come to buy as well. An: k, it sounds good to me. Thank you very much for meeting me again. I would go back to work on the recommendation. If there is any problem, don’t you mind if I call you to ask? Ms. Line: Call me as soon as you have questions. I’m very glad that I can help you. k see way. An: Thank you. Audio script of the interview on 11 April 2013 with Mr.. Do Truing Tuna, owner off rockery shop for over 20 years to ask for some advices for the business That: I m working on a small accessories shop and I intend to ask you some advices for my sub topic which is special offer. Tuna: so its about loyalty program? That: yes and also attract first-time customers Actually, I plan to recommend this shop to apply discount on special days like Valentine and Woman days, specifically, ‘20% discount’, what do you think? Tuna: well, on special days? Mum†¦ I think that it s not a good idea. Firstly, every shop especially small shop should not apply more than 5 to 10% on special days because they can ell more of their products within those days; some shops don’t even have enough stuff to sell, so why then they apply discount? Why do you choose special days to offer? That: I think that special offer will attract more customers, maybe new customers. Many people don’t usually buy products unless it is special days. Those days, they are encouraged to buy something for their friends and family right? Then I think I can focus on new customers Tuna: I think that you should balance between loyal and new customers, I mean it s more about services. If you offer discount for ewe customers the same amount you offer for the old one, they must be upset. Why don’t you separate the offer? I mean decide different offer for different customers? For example, offer 5% for first time customers and 10% for old customers. That: but how can we realize who is the new and who is old customer? Tuna: I think the shop should have been applied some of the other sale promotion tools which can help you to recognize customers such as membership card. There are many way to recognize them, I suggest you to research more about how to realize customers digitally through the internet since the internet is necessary for all the business. Christian Elements In Beowulf Essay Example For Students

Christian Elements In Beowulf Essay The praised epic poem, Beowulf, is the first great heroic poem in English literature. The epic follows a courageous warrior named Beowulf throughout his young, adult life and into his old age. As a young man, Beowulf becomes a legendary hero when he saves the land of the Danes from the hellish creatures, Grendel and his mother. Later, after fifty years pass, Beowulf is an old man and a great king of the Geats. A monstrous dragon soon invades his peaceful kingdom and he defends his people courageously, dying in the process. His body is burned and his ashes are placed in a cave by the sea. By placing his ashes in the seaside cave, people passing by will always remember the legendary hero and king, Beowulf. In this recognized epic, Beowulf, is abound in supernatural elements of pagan associations; however, the poem is the opposite of pagan barbarism. The presentation of the story telling moves fluidly within Christian surroundings as well as pagan ideals. Beowulf was a recited pagan folklore where the people of that time period believed in gods, goddesses, and monsters. Its significance lies in an oral history where people memorized long, dense lines of tedious verse. Later, when a written tradition was introduced they began to write the story down on tablets. The old tale was not first told or invented by the commonly known, Beowulf poet. This is clear from investigations of the folk lore analogues. The manuscript was written by two scribes around AD 1000 in late West Saxon, the literary dialect of that period. It is believed that the scribes who put the old materials together into their present form were Christians and that his poem reflects a Christian tradition. The first scribe copied three prose pieces and the first 1,939 lines of Beowulf while the second scribe copied the rest of Beowulf and Judith. In 1731, a fire swept through the Cottonian Library, damaging many books and scorching the Beowulf codex. In 1786-87, after the manuscript had been deposited in the British Museum the Icelander, Grinur Jonsson Thorkelin, made two transcriptions of the poem for what was to be the first edition, in 1815 Clark, 112-15. Beowulf is a mixture of pagan and Christian attitudes. Heathen practices are mentioned in several places, such as vowing of sacrifices at idol fanes, the observing of omens, the burning of the dead, which was frowned upon by the church. The frequent allusions to the power of fate, the motive of blood revenge, and the praise of worldly glory bear testimony to the ancient background of pagan conceptions and ideals. However, the general tone of the epic and its ethical viewpoint are predominantly Christian . There is no longer a genuine pagan atmosphere. The sentiment has been softened and purified. The virtues of moderation, unselfishness, consideration for others are practiced and appreciated. Beowulf is a Christian reworking of a pagan poem with a string of pagan lays edited by monks; it is the work of a learned but inaccurate Christian antiquarian Clark, 112. The author has fairly exhaulted the fights with Grendel, his mother, and the dragon into a conflict between powers of good and evil. The figure of Grendel, while originally an ordinary Scandinavian troll is conceived as an impersonation of evil and darkness, even an incarnation of the Christian devil. Grendel is a member of the race of Cain, from whom all misshapen and unnatural things were spawned Kermode, 42 such as ogres and elves. He is a creature dwelling in the outer darkness, a giant and cannibal. When he crawls off to die, he is said to join the route of devils in hell. The story of a race of demonic monsters and giants descended from Cain. It came form a tradition established by the apocryphal Book of Enoch and early Jewish and Christian interpretations of Genesis 6:4, There were giants in the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God had relations with the daughters of men, who bore children to them Holland Crossley, 15. Many of Grendels appellations are unquestionable epithets of Satan such as enemy of mankind, Gods adversary, the devil in hell, and the hell slave. His actions are represented in a manner suggesting the conduct of the evil one, and he dwells with his mother in a mere which conjures visions of hell. Clown EssayThere is real conscious analogy between Beowulf and Christ. There is, for example, the familiar parallel between Hroogars praise of Beowulf, Yes, she may say, whatever, woman brought forth this son among mankind-if she still lives-that the God of Old was kind to her in childbearing Kermode, 45, and the remark of a woman to Christ in Luke 11:27, Blessed is the womb that bore thee, and the breasts that thou hast sucked. Also, this speech occurs shortly after Christ has cast out a demon 11:14-18, while that of Hroogar follows Beowulfs cleansing Heorot of the demonic Grendel. Again, Beowulf goes forth to fight the dragon accompanied by a band of twelve, one of whom is a culprit; during the fight the eleven retainers flee, and one returns. This parallels the picture of Christ shortly before his death attended by the twelve Apostles: the treason of Judas, the flight of the eleven remaining Apostles, and the return of John at the crucifixion. Beowulf and Christ are icons of wisdom and power. Christ is frequently represented by patristic writers as the wisdom and power of God. A Vercelli Homily remarks of his early life that he was filled with might and wisdom before God and before men Tuso, 129, and the poetic Descent into Hell describes him at the Resurrection as brave . . . victorious and wise Tuso, 22. In early medieval iconography, there commonly existed a portrayal of a warlike and victorious Christ with his feet resting on a prostrate lion and dragon which parallels Beowulf and Jesus as heroic figures. Fr. Klaeber wrote, We might feel inclined to recognize features of the Christian Savior in the destroyer of hellish fiends, the warrior brave and gentle, blameless in thought and deed, the king that dies for his people Chickering, 17. Both icons represented power and wisdom of heroes. The scene where Beowulf dives into Grendels dark mere and begins his descent into the watery depths swimming until the ninth hour of the day Kermode, 57. This is almost an unavoidable biblical echo. In Luke 23:44-46, it is the same hour that Christ, abandoned by all but a faithful few, died on the cross. Furthermore, this is where Beowulf dove into Grendel and his mothers dark mere and swam until the ninth hour, reaching the meres bottom, symbolizing the death of Christ and his stay in hell. Beowulf, having lain down his life for the defense of his people and having thanked God for winning the dragons treasure for their use, suggests the figure of Christ. Charles Donahue eloquently wrote, Our poet liked diptychs, and he left his audience with a pair of images, Beowulf at the dragons barrow on one side of the diptych, Jesus on Calvary on the other Poupard, 18. Donahue suggests that both Christ and Beowulf are martyrs for their people. They each gave up their lives to save the people. The champion Beowulf, in life is reminiscent of the champion Christ in various aspects of his wisdom and power. Beowulf in the end is not revealed to be a God-man but man. His death not a supernatural atonement but a natural phenomenon. An analogy of any kind between Beowulf and Christ in itself account for the notorious absence of explicit references in the poem. The epic of Beowulf is wrapped in a history of pagan ideal and Christian surroundings. The poem is woven in Christian allegorical figures which give Beowulf a romantic mystery that many epics lack. Beowulf is a timeless classic that has endured the centuries. All that is left of the epic is the heros fame, a monument as enduring as earth.

Effective Ways to Improve Creativity

Effective Ways to Improve Creativity Overview Although creativity is innate, it is more of a balance between nurture and nature. In essence, creativity can be enhanced through external forces. Additionally, it is not particularly dependent on natural ability or good genes as some people would lead you to believe. The good news is that there are various environmental and mental approaches that can be used to enhance your creative capacity. The following research based techniques will help you to generate more ideas or increase original or flexible thinking. Widen Your Sphere of Knowledge Every individual is exposed to a certain range of events of information in the course of their lifetime which informs their creative abilities. According to research, finding effective and creative solutions to challenging issues is more likely to expand your breadth of attention, as compared to when you narrow it. With a wider sphere of information, you are able to associate or tap into more of your creative abilities. When you focus on several elements simultaneously, your mind will combine this information into original and unique ideas. Seek for Ambient Noise If you find you yourself more creative when working from a coffee shop, there is enough evidence to back your claim. Psychologists believe that when you are working in an environment where there is a moderate ambient noise, you can improve your creativity as compared to working in a quiet or very noisy place. The theory behind this principle is that a certain level of noise is distracting. This makes it more difficult to process information. When processing of information is made more difficult, the brain induces an increased level of abstract thinking. This enhances creativity. Additionally, a low level of ambient noise does not create any disruption to your thinking process, and therefore does not induce a higher level of thinking. Leave Your Chair and Move Around Multiple experiments indicate that some level of body movement, away from your working chair can improve your creativity. It doesn’t have to be something rigorous. A simple activity such as energetic walking outdoors or pacing around your room can be very beneficial. Moving around activates the abstract process of thinking, thus helping to unblock fixated thinking. If you normally encounter mental block after working for a certain period, then you should implement this procedure. By the time you resume your workstation, you will notice that ideas will flow easily and smoothly. Stay Positive Although negative feelings can sometimes trigger creativity, researchers have established that you are in your best level of creativity when you have positive moods. In fact, the simple act of thinking about love or just a feeling of love, can encourage creative thinking. Therefore, position yourself in a positive environment with positive friends, and you will activate your moods. The result is enhanced creativity. Bottom Line Contrary to popular belief, creativity is not given to certain few individuals at birth. Most psychologists agree that creativity is equally distributed within the population. The truth is, most people use only a small portion of their natural creative abilities. However, if you implement the above tips, you will definitely notice a considerable improvement in your creative thinking abilities.

Evolution... essays

Evolution... essays Felix Qui Potuit Rerum Cognoscere Causas Happy is He Who Has Been Able to Learn the Causes of Things -Virgil Charles Darwin, with the publication of The Origin of Species, is recognized as the father of modern evolutionary theory. His revolutionary beliefs and ideas were direct results of contributions to evolutionary thought spanning from ancient Greece to the nineteenth century. These influences included great minds such as Carolus Linnaeus, Erasmus Darwin, Jean Baptiste Lamarck, and Sir Charles Lyell. As time progressed, these thinkers and a wide range of others contributed a growing body of knowledge supporting evolution, and creating a foundation on which Darwin would base his theory of evolution by natural selection. Evolution is defined as the continuous genetic adaptation of organisms or species to the environment by the integrating agencies of selection, and is a combination of science and philosophy explaining how all species originated. Darwins theory of evolution suggests that organisms adapt and respond to their environments, thereby evolving to become better suited to their respective environments. This theory is known as the survival of the fittest, where the most adapted organisms survive and flourish, and the less suited creatures eventually become easier prey and die off. This theory of evolution, also termed natural selection, is nearly universally accepted as the correct explanation of evolution (Stansfield 478). The sciences, especially geology and biology, obviously play a very large role in evolutionary philosophy. Geology is a branch of science that is vital to validate evolution. This science basically gives evolution the timeline for which millions upon millions of creatures can adapt and evolve. Before Sir Charles Lyell proved that the earth was over four billion years old, most believed that it was between five and seven thousand years of age. Obviously, this sort of a...

Discuss the interpretation of First Industrial Revolution as an Term Paper

Discuss the interpretation of First Industrial Revolution as an Industrious revolution - Term Paper Example Due to the introduction of improved methods, production could be made at a much larger scale than before. Improvements in methods of production and production possibilities in large scale allowed the manufacturers to produce better quality products at lower cost and within a lower period of time than it could produce previously. There are debates regarding the origin of the industrial revolution. According to some authors and historians, the beginning of the revolution was in Britain. The industrial revolution has been often termed as British invention. However, according to some other sources the roots of the revolution is unclear. Several European countries participated in the revolution and made it a global success. Some researchers have claimed that the term was first coined in France. Significant improvements can be found to have taken place during this period in France in economic as well as social spheres. These combined changes were named as ‘revolution industrielleâ₠¬â„¢ in France and it was considered to be an economic counterpart of the political revolution that was taking place in the country during the period. Industrious revolution One thing is apparent from this discussion; it is that the industrial revolution took place as a result of considerable hard work and diligent attitude of the people that took the leading position in this revolution. The industrial revolution is the outcome of an ‘industrious revolution’ that took place in different parts of the world to improve the status of production units in the economies that participated in this activity. It took the form of industrial revolution when many countries from Europe as well as Asia took part in it. The phase of industrious revolution was prior to the industrial revolution between the 17th century and the 19th century. According to some scholars, this revolution was the forerunner of the industrial revolution (Craig and Thomas 248). The phenomenon of industrious rev olution refers to the spending behavior of households during the 17th century. Therefore, it relates to the production as well as consumption of products and services. The simplistic explanation of the cause of revolution is that there was an unprecedented rise in demand for goods and services in the market. The industrious revolution took place before the industrial revolution took shape. Understanding of the industrious revolution would allow readers to understand the context of the industrial revolution better. According to information revealed by various sources, the first industrial revolution took place in the early Modern Period. The period of revolution was characterized by availability of excess of money as well as excess amount of food crops. This was the result of development of new technology and methods of production. However, the force that led to these technological advancements took shape during the pre-industrial revolution period, known as industrious revolution. D uring this period England moved from being an economy with sporadic technological changes to an economy in which persistent technological advancements took place. Well known historians, Joachim Voth and Jan de Vries have

Russia's Most Important Economic Sectors Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Russia's Most Important Economic Sectors - Essay Example Shortly after liberty, the new Russian government announced a much more determined program of political and economic reformation. The agenda included an alteration of the financial system from the values of state planning which is the basic and administrative direction to the well agreed market-based economics. As result â€Å"The economic decline bottomed out in mid-2009 and the economy began to grow in the third quarter of 2009† (Economy – Overview n.d.). On the other side, Russia’s financial growth was still focused mainly in a few sectors. The advantages of growth were not widely dispersed throughout the society. Over one-third of the people of the Russian Federation sustained to live below the poverty line. According to some study it is very clear that Russia’s long term challenges are inadequate workplace, corruption, complexity in accessing capital for smaller – non energy companies, and deprived infrastructure in need of huge investments. Ru ssia ranks ninth as the largest economy of the world: it contributes to the sixth place by purchasing power. The country has abundance of the petroleum, oil and natural gas. The country is also the store house of rare and precious metals. Despite the setbacks faced by the other countries in the erstwhile Soviet Union, Russia managed to be in a good position in the world’s economy. The main sectors of the Russian economy are energy, natural resources, agriculture, industry and manufacturing. Energy Sector: One error of the energy business is its construction, which is subjected by government-backed monopoly and distinguished by inequity next to private businesses, small family operators and global players. If people cant afford the money and have enough time, it means the people cant go. Besides that, the availability in travel such as flight to certain location, suitable products like the range of different holidays, having transports to travel easily, marketing of a destination for bringing attention, and ease of booking. Disabilities Awareness Program :: College Admissions Essays

Disabilities Awareness Program    As the first student editor of this Disabilities Awareness newsletter for high school students, I was initially wary of the task. I had virtually no contact with anyone who faced a disability. I believe the fact that I was not familiar with the subject made me more curious about whom I would meet and what stories I would encounter. As editor, I presided over a group of students who helped develop and write this first edition. We have all learned a great deal from one another about people with disabilities and our attitudes toward them. Responding to a request sent out to English teachers, we came together to try something new which I hope you will enjoy reading as much as we have enjoyed writing.    My first job as student editor was to attend a ceremony last June at the Executive Mansion celebrating the inclusion of students with disabilities in New York State schools. I was completely awestruck at the determination of the students I met there. They had so willingly separated the myths of disabilities from the facts. These young students did not look at the disabilities that other students had, but saw through them and saw the person.    At the ceremony some special people came together to celebrate not only the success of inclusion, but the acceptance of inclusion. The day brought smiling faces for many children and adults alike who had participated in some way by including a person with a disability in some aspect of their lives. At the ceremony in the Executive Mansion, First Lady Libby Pataki presented achievement awards to both students and teachers. The Mansion was filled with the sounds of laughter.    It was after this ceremony that a group of students got together to write articles included in this publication. There were many stories submitted of inspiration and hope. Many of them parallel what was shown at the ceremony. Yet the thing which stands out the most is the concept that these are people. They are not the disability but they are the person. It is often forgotten that there is more to see than the disability. The personal struggles and acceptances point out what is really important.    Classrooms in 23 schools across the State participated in the Disabilities Awareness Program last year. Many more schools will join the program this year.

Market Models

The main objective of a private firm is to maximize profits and without the control over costs, they try to sell at higher prices. This is true if the operating industry has an inelastic demand schedule as a price rise brings in higher revenue. The Marginal revenue concept states that in order to increase revenues, firms need to lower prices if they are operating in a price-elastic industry but a fall in price in a relatively in-elastic demand adds a deficit to the revenue that so firms increase their prices in order to attain a higher profit. 2) The US airline industry operates in the oligopolistic structure. That is the big four firms namely American, Southwest, United and Delta have a combined share of more than 40% of the market which supports the fact that these firms can be classified as oligopolies. Further the firms do not react to price increases that sharply as it is a characteristic of an oligopoly to react more towards a price fall rather than an increase except for the case of a market leader. 3) No, the result will not differ whether we consider the entire domestic market or just the market for San Francisco and Seattle. The firms operating are same and customers are quite rational that is the service being offered is homogenous so it would not matter if we look at it as a whole or individually. Here a price rise in the case of a single market would mean that the competitor may gain an advantage and attain higher revenue. 4) There are many advantages of collusion or price fixing related to competitors. One of them being an equal share for all, this means that they can share areas among themselves and reduce competition. This helps reduce uncertainty as the market saturation is done and firms are bound by agreement to receive equal share. This would further give rise to profits and most of all this behavior is a very strong entry barrier as firms can unite in order to drive away an entrant. Collusive pricing also means a restricted supply therefore firms can ask higher prices as there is a quota in place thus creating an in-elastic demand. 5) No, an oligopoly operates in between both extremes of its demand schedule that is the elastic region and the in-elastic region. The reason that the firm rescinds from increasing prices is due to the fear of losing its market share as the products in this industry are homogenous and so the customers would shift easily to other airlines. The oligopolists must consider how their rivals will react to any change in the price, output, characteristics, or advertising. Oligopoly is thus characterized by strategic behaviour and mutual interdependence. By strategic behaviour we simply mean self interested behaviour that takes into account the reaction of others. So we can not associate that such advertisements or statements are for a fixture in price. Bibliography 1)Parkin, Michael. (2004) Economics. Addison Wesley Publishing Company
